The oldest buildings of mankind

Menhirs

Menhir (from nizhnelenskoe: men — stone and hir — long) is a simple megalith as a mounted man roughly worked stones, whose vertical dimensions are significantly higher than horizontal.

Menhirs

The menhirs could be used for a variety of purposes that are currently unknown and may not be defined. Among the likely assignments of the cult :ritual fencing and other structures, the symbolism of the center, the definition of the boundaries of possession, elements of rituals of transition, or fertility, phallic symbols.

Dolmens

The dolmens (from Brit. taol maen — stone) ancient megalithic (that is, composed of large stones or stone slabs) structures of a certain shape.

Dolmens

Caucasian dolmens were created in the early and middle bronze age, III-II Millennium BC and remained in use until the first Millennium BC in the times of the megalithic culture.

Cromlechs

The cromlech — an ancient (Neolithic times, bronzovogo and later, until the early middle Ages) construction, representing are set vertically in the ground whether rough or oblong stones (menhirs), forming one or more concentric circles

Cromlechs

The stones that make up the cromlech may be elongated in the style of a menhir, or completely shapeless boulders. For technological purposes was usually used flat plate. The shape of the cromlech most often round or oval, but there are also other forms, for example, in Khakassia(rectangular cromlechs) or in Malta (megalithic temples, cromlechs in the form of “petals”).

Conclusion

Today there is no single answer to the question,what were these amazing, ancient architectural structures: the Church,the necropolis,the Observatory,but in any case they began with monumental architecture.
